This is what the WestFjords looked like in late spring after two snowstorms.
Incredible views around every corner. We want to go back! We saw an Arctic Fox on the road shortly after taking this photo, but it moved off too quickly for us to get a photo.
Sheds for drying fish, near Isafjordur
Eyrarkirkja, on the shore of Seyðisfjarðar, the second fjord east from Isafjordur.
The church looks like a little model next to the fjord
Now Eyrarkirkja í Seyðisfirði really looks like a model!
Arngerðareyri, the house of a trading manager, from the late 1880s.
The dock at Arngerðareyri, where a ferry ran to Isafjordur before the roads were made
Abandoned dock at Arngerðareyri
Arngerðareyri, trading point from the 1880s. House abandoned in 1966
The post office at Hólmavík, where the IcelandicAir courier dropped our luggage.
Looking across the fjord towards Drangsnes, where we were staying that night
Hólmavíkurkirkja, church at Hólmavík, made of concrete in 1968. Roof not red!
Several letters in this name that aren't on my keyboard.
Another view of Hólmavíkurkirkja from the harbor.
Lovely fishing boats! Shiny!
Water sculpture in Holmavik, near the harbor.
The Malarhornsviti lighthouse right above our guesthouse! Stands 3 meters high.
Our bedroom at Malahorn Guesthouse after moving the beds around
We had the entire building to ourselves, and we sorted things out from our luggage.
Clean, modern bath! In floor heat too all night to come up to 19C. We were chilly for a while!
We made a little planning nook in front of the other bedroom. My pocket flashlight is taped above.
Comfortable dining room and living room with the kitchen, all to ourselves!
Time for some tea!
Cuppa with some tasty biscuits? Why yes, please!
We brought a hula dash ornament, but completely forgot to secure her to the dashboard of the car!
Boats parked everywhere, it seems!
Sorting out clothes from our recently arrived luggage.
Common eider ducks feeding in the kelp beds near shore
Looking across the fjord to Route 68 that we will drive tomorrow
Route 68 climbs across the peninsula, and will give us nice views tomorrow
Setting sun shows highlights the textures of the land.
Grimsey Island with the Grímseyjarviti Lighthouse
Taken from Drangsnes, WestFjords, Iceland at sunset.
Gradually zooming in on Grímseyjarviti Lighthouse
Grímseyjarviti Lighthouse, 300mm, the far end of my zoom
Modern digital sensors make the golden light at sunset pretty dramatic.
Grímseyjarviti Lighthouse, 500mm
Taken with the Nikkor 300mm f2.8 VR with the TC-17 teleconverter. Shot on a monopod.
Looking back towards coast north of Hólmavík
Vatnsnes Peninsula, which we will drive around tomorrow
Beautiful farms in the setting sun
Vatnsnes Peninsula headlands
The golden light of the setting sun lasts quite a while in Iceland
Algae covered smoothed boulder. Fairly common.
Oystercatcher hunting down dinner
How trivial seem the works of man in this quiet land.
Fishing boats started heading in and out at sunset
Catching the beam from the setting sun.
This fishing boat looks slower, but it was traveling at a good clip.
Coming past Drangsnes, many boats turned slightly to the east, probably heading to Hólmavík
Catching the setting sun again.
Golden light on gull.
Another fishing boat comes in, passing Grimsey Island.
