Sun going down as we arrive at Dyrhólaeyjarviti lighthouse to the west of Vik (Looking west from Dyrhólaey lighthouse, near Vik, southern coastal Iceland. Nikon D800e)
We are up here to look for puffins, which are at their nests in the morning or evening
There is a subtle mist coming off the water, best seen in the distance
Dyrhólaeyjarviti, Dyrhólaey lighthouse. Quite a substantial structure.
Puffins are actually rather small birds. Smaller than the stuffed toys in the gift shops!
Puffin couple approaching their burrow
I believe it is the male standing watch. Males are slightly larger and have a slightly larger beak.
Mist rising from the sea in the distance. (Looking west from Dyrhólaey lighthouse, near Vik, southern coastal Iceland. 500mm (300mm f/2.8 VR + TC17II) Nikon D800e on monopod)
Puffin standing proud, almost looks like he's wearing a tuxedo
Now we can see the tails of his tuxedo
The puffin march.
This is a pretty classic look I kept getting from the puffins...
Puffin pining for the fjords.
There's that look again.
Waiting for another puffin?
Puffin gazing into the sunset
Getting ruffled by the non-stop Icelandic wind
Pensive puffin settling down to wait. (Taken at Dyrhólaey lighthouse, near Vik, southern coastal Iceland. 500mm (300mm f/2.8 VR + TC17II) Nikon D800e on monopod)
Time to leave?
A trio of puffins, with lots of head swivelling.
Check those blind spots!
Nothing to report!
Getting a wing stretch in before going fishing.
They look so serious
Everybody checks their wings before takeoff (Puffins at Dyrhólaey lighthouse, near Vik, southern coastal Iceland. 500mm (300mm f/2.8 VR + TC17II) Nikon D800e on monopod)
Do you want to check your wings?
They keep up their surveillance.
The puffin on the right is going to go for a little walk.
He needs to get down from this giant hill.
He chooses to do a little hop.
and now warms up the wings
Stretching them out as well.
He is watched from the puffins back at the top of the mound.
Wings warming up.
Speculation on whether the grass is greener down there.
Overlapping puffins
This is a full frame image of the scene. The previous are cropped about 50%. DX body would be ok!
The sun is getting very low and everything is tinted gold
Dyrhólaey lighthouse as the sun sets lower
Reynisdrangar, black basalt columns at Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach
The sun has dropped behind the mountains to the west. Light levels dropping, ISO up to 1600.
Sun peeking out from behind the mountains
Details of the mountains and plains barely visible against the golden sky
Reflections of the sky off of streams on the coastal plains. (Looking west from Dyrhólaey lighthouse, near Vik, southern coastal Iceland. 500mm (300mm f/2.8 VR + TC17II) Nikon D800e on monopod)
Small islands south of Dyrhólaey lighthouse. They probably have names, but I can't find them.
Reynisdrangar after sunset. 1/40th of a second, 500mm! Even with a monopod that's ambitious.
Back at the car, the setting sun is lighting up the cloudes
This is the Iceland salute! Camera up, looking into the distance.
Had to stop on the road down the hill, the sunset was so beautiful
Just another average Icelandic evening!
