2014Apr Iceland iPhone Willis
We raced out of Seydisfjordur, hoping to get out before the storm closed the road.
No photos with the D800e: I was concentrating on staying on the road. Yellow markers are great!
Lots of blowing snow, iPhone found it easiest to focus on the dashboard.
Friendly horses south of Breiðdalsvík, once we got to the coast
This white horse ended up being quite friendly
He is wondering if it is worth getting to the grass on the other side of the fence
Storm clouds moving in from the sea as well as following us south over the mountains.
He (or she!) found out that I had sugar cubes!
Several sugar cubes were munched down.
Storm coming ashore to the south, where we are headed.
Streitisviti Lighthouse, just south of Breiðdalsvík harbor.
Streitisviti Lighthouse, with the storm in the background
Streitisviti Lighthouse
Streitisviti Lighthouse, rather a taller lighthouse than usual in Iceland
We have gotten ahead of the storm, and it is now advancing over Papey Island
This is what the sky looks like to the south, with the big storm coming from the east towards us.
Definitely makes me want to take a hike up to the ridgeline!
Coming south along Berufjörður, low tide, so the rocks and shoals are prominent
Beautiful farms on the north side of Berufjörður
Storm coming down the valleys from the mountains to the north as well
Another view of the storm gradually catching up to us...
One of the few flowers to be found at the end of April!
Caught sight of this nice little waterfall right along the Ring Road.
Climbing up the hill near the waterfall to put the flowers together with the coming storm
Looking across Jökulsá (glacier river) towards the south where we are headed.
The storm has come ashore with some snow.
Hvalnes Lighthouse! I had no idea that it was a lighthouse in the blowing snow.
Brunnhorn Mountain, but many people know it as Batman Mountain!
The storm followed us down from the north, catching up with us.
Passing through the tunnel just to the east of Höfn, we leave the storm behind. Peggy took this!
Out into clear weather. Southern Iceland towns seem to have shorter names...
We watched several motorists stop and look at the clouds coming from the north from where we came.
We spent two nights at Apotek Guesthouse, which was fantastic. I failed to take photos there!
A very simple shape, dressed up nicely.
Lots of terns nesting on tiny islands along the coast
Looking north to Hornafjörður, clouds coming across the mountains.
Adding a little bit of prime Höfn coastal real estate to the view of Hornafjörður.
Looking to the west at Vatnajökull National Park
Little waders working on dinner. A dunin?
An oystercatcher wading about.
The sign was obeyed! No dog poop in sight!
Mountains of Vatnajökull National Park lurking in the background
We will have to explore more of Vatnajökull National Park on another trip, during the summer!
Taken from the coast in Höfn, Iceland, looking west
Fisheye view of mountains of Vatnajökull National Park from Höfn
Continuing our walk along the coast to the north.
Beautiful skies and mountains as a backdrop. Hard to take a bad photo in Iceland...
I love the pink playhouse!
The mountains of Vatnajökull National Park call us to explore them!
Lots of books and great windows to look out of while reading. The ideal house!
We were joined on our walk by a very friendly little cat.
