View from our living room window at Dimmuborgir Guesthouse on Lake Mývatn (Hverfjall is the volcanic cone on the very left edge of the photo)
Short drive to Hverfjall, the cinder cone of an ancient volcano
Walking along the flooded road along the west side, we see the clouds sweeping in towards us.
Following other's tracks up the side of the cone. We couldn't find the official trail in the snow.
Mountains to the north, with clouds moving in quickly
Looking south over Lake Mývatn
Halfway up Hverfjall, clouds reached us. Winds 15-20 kph sustained, with gusts up to 35 kph.
Clear to the north now...
At the top! Whew!
Vent in the center of the volcano
Clouds coming over the north of the crater
Clouds sweeping over the south rim.
Sun gradually setting over Lake Mývatn
Clouds now very dense, about 100m visibility.
Hard to see across the crater.
Finally found the hard way down at the south edge of the rim.
Using hiking poles for a bit to go down.
Then sliding down in the snow.
This is what the hard way up looks like
Walking back around the south of Hverfjall to the car.
Now we find the map! This might have been useful at the start of the hike!
Walking into the sunset
The golden light lasts a long time in Iceland!
Peggy's work of art!
Hverfjall at sunset.
